Pass to Power: What is Race and Passing?

Update: I posted this 666 days ago but blue eyed devil Rachael Dolezal is back in the news with her snake oil version of racial identity.  She got a book deal and all I have is this blog so I’m reposting this in hopes someone may share it with her and read educate this white woman-Rachel, please have several seats, and be humble.

Busted: Rachel Dolezal, Howard Graduate, Head of the NAACP in Spokane, and outspoken black community activist is white.  Outed by a local reporter and mercilessly–and hilariously–taken down on twitter Rachel has sparked lots of chatter about what is race and who can be which one.  Passing points to the essential function of race–that it structures power, not color.  People who pass are not trying to look different, they are trying to change their status.

Race is not in our DNA, it’s a social construct.  That means, despite what your eyes see, there are not different races of people.  In fact, there is no gene for race in the human genome.  Biologically, humans are all part of one family.

So, if race isn’t real, then we can just say racism is dead, yell, “Black President!” and get on with it right?  Wrong.  I mean, have you read this blog before?  Since the birth of America, race has been used to structure, economic and political relationships.  Prior to the 1600’s race really wasn’t a thing.  People had and still have different cultures, but not different racial categories.  The first time the word race even appears in the English language is 1508, so the Ancient world did not  have the concept of different races.

With the conquest of the Americas and a fresh addiction to sugar, European conquerers needs many hands to make the hard work of sugar, tobacco and cotton farming light.  But, since the America’s were little more than a handful of rough outposts, they couldn’t attract a voluntary workforce with crazy benefits like being allowed to live free and get paid.  Thus begins the transatlantic slave trade, one of the darkest events in all of human history.

slave trade map

Race as a social construct was created essentially to protect this labor force.   Many laws–not just one–over hundreds of years were used to keep one class of people–black people–enslaved.  Politicians traded power for allowing the perpetuation of the institution of slavery, even our conflicted founding father Thomas Jefferson.  He wrote all men were created equal, but could not build the country he desired without those free hands to do the work.

What would get good God fearing people to support the systematic violent oppression of their human brothers and sister? A story, a narrative that normalizes terror as truth.  At the center of the narrative was the concept that blacks were not humans, and therefore did not deserve human rights.  While the institution of slavery ended 7 generations ago, America still struggles to shake this narrative.

Racism is supported by personal prejudice.  Individual beliefs about different groups of people perpetuate the kind of thinking that allows police to kill young people unchecked by the electorate.  But even if every person in America woke up tomorrow firmly antiracist in their heart, the laws that structure education, housing, economics, justice and other systems would still have racial bias in them.  Like a zombie–we may be the body, but if the zombie brain of racism lives, terror ensues.

Over the centuries, hundreds if not thousands of people have tried to game the system by “passing”–taking on the identity of a race other than their own–mostly white.  Whites were able to be free, vote, own land–and slaves–and a host of other privileges that came with whiteness.  These privileges–which still exist in different ways today–helped keep people bought in to systems of oppression.  Black people willing to give up their culture and their ancestry could take on all the benefits of whiteness as long as they stayed hidden.

Anita Florence Hemmings passed as white in oredr to attend Vassar in 1897
Anita Florence Hemmings passed as white in order to attend Vassar in 1897
Given our history of race and racism, and ignoring the self-hate of abdicating your culture, there were some legal and societal benefits people gained by passing as white–not the least of which was freedom.  But what could Rachel Dolezal possibly gain by passing as black?  Everything.

In a country where whiteness is too often invisible to white people, Rachel wouldn’t be the first white girl to long to have a (different) culture.  No boring suburbia for her, Rachel takes cultural appropriation to a whole new level. No matter how many Mileys and Iggys try to beg ignorance, appropriation is real–and real simple to understand.

iceberg of culture

Imagine culture is an iceberg.  Certain parts of it are visible–food, dance, dress, festivals–while the foundation of what makes a culture are buried deep below the surface–beliefs, values rituals, shared lived realities and ways of being.  Millions of people of African decent, shipped abroad during the slave trade or settled here in America carved out a way of surviving , a way of being in the face of unstoppable cruelty, a way of thriving within a system built to destroy them.  The soul food, and the blues and the style and hip hop are the visible parts of the legacy of this ongoing struggle, but the deeper elements are essential to making sense of those expressions. Cultural appropriation is when you break off the top of the iceberg and wear it around like a costume.  You can dress up, dance, and even bite the rhymes of a culture….

CHVoCtcUsAA2GYL

But when you do, you leave behind the larger, more important part of culture: the deeply help beliefs, shared experiences, values, ancestry and destiny-the truth of what it means to be part of that group.  This part of the iceberg can’t be pulled out of the water and worn to the VMA’s.  They can’t be weaved onto your ends like Hawaiian silky.  They can’t belong to you, Rachel, or you either, Iggy.

All of these women cover themselves in a carcass they call blackness made out of stereotypes, stolen hairstyles and narratives that they’ve nicked to make themselves feel cool, beautiful, feel like they are a part of something. At the same time their white privilege gives them entrance into public spheres often denied actual black women, taking their voice and supplanting it with a white fantasy version.

And Rachel was a teacher, someone paid to tell other people how to think about and construct black femininity.  This is not how you love a culture–this is how you erase it.  Far from helping the community as some–including the NAACP–have suggested, her actions show the worst kind of white privilege–the privilege to define blackness with a white voice.

  1. The native Aryans always aware of their own race, since at least thousands of years before our existence and yes. There are real racial markers in DNA. Aryan individuals have negative blood types and children to inherit the sex chromosome with forms their sexual organs. The sex chromosomes are XX and XY. Rachel Dolezal is a real racial Jew mixed with distant Black ancestry. (edited)

    1. You seem to know a lot about her blood considering she has never had a DNA test. Be careful supplanting science with ideology–that has not worked out well for those who do. There is no DNA marker for race, endlessly supported by genetic scientists. Period. The conscept of race did not exist–in any culture–until after 1508.

      1. You don’t make sense! You indirectly stated that you do believe in DNA test and “know a lot of about her blood.” If you really believed about “the concept of race” you wouldn’t even admit about DNA test. If you would read my other post from KING 5 about the “Kennewick man,” the scientist in Europe discovered the man’s “genome sequence” and it is proven by actual science, the “Kennewick man” was an Native America who lived over 3,000 years ago, in what is now Washington state and the ancient Romans knew about their Aryan race, as the word Aryan derived from the Latin the language of the Roman language as Aria. If the ancient Romans weren’t aware of their own race, the ancient Romans wouldn’t classified the people in Europe as “Aria” or in English Aryan.

      2. I directly stated that you seem to imply you know a lot about Rachel Dolezal’s DNA. I do believe the MIT genetic scientist who told me emphatically and directly that there is no gene for race. That does not mean that we can’t tell a lot about a person from their genes. but the is not marked gene for race. There is no scientific debate on that. romans, having a massive empire, had lots of names for the groups of people that they conquered, but these are not equivalent to our modern day construct.

      3. The MIT “genetic scientists” don’t have much scientific knowledge compared to the real scientist in Europe who are in a real University. MIT is a technical college and they don’t have legitimate knowledge of genome sequencing of those scientists in Europe “modern day construct” a social identity term and that term has nothing to do with real science. You are allowed to believe those lies from MIT, I know the facts about real science and your fantasy opinion about race will not change my stance on real genome sequencing DNA science!

      4. ‘Real scientists in Europe?! In UCL – the leading department in genetics – which also happens to stem from when it used be the department of eugenics – state race is a social construct and there is no race gene. Know your science before spreading ignorance.

      5. If race is a “social construct” why would UCL have a department of genetics and a department eugenics. If race didn’t exist neither would the department of genetics would exist either because those scientists who are in the department of genetics are aware race can be confirmed in a genome sequencing such as when the scientists in Europe confirmed the remains of the “Kennewick man” found in Washington state was now is considered Native America because the scientists in Europe studying the remains of the “Kennewick Man” and they did conduct a genome sequencing on him and that’s how the scientists knew the remains are native American. It is you who is ignorant and not knowing proper science. All you who believe this “racial construct” fantasy science actually write the same fantasy junk to me. It is as if you all have one immature minds are are taught the same junk and was rehearsed to write the same junk when an individual knows the truth of your fantasy “racial construct” lies. Don’t you have original lies about “racial construct” that you personally can write besides rewritting the same defensive junk as previous writters who as commented your same comments about the “racial construct” fantasy. Thank for your self. I do believe you have the consciousness to be able to think for your own self as I have mentioned before all you people are rewritting the same junk!

      6. I am not going to even bother replying to you properly because of your name.
I welcome you to google UCL’s history of eugenics yourself if you’re that bothered. Dtmh.ucl.ac.uk is a good starting point

      7. I am not bothered. It is you who have psychological issue, just as my maternal grandmother Eva Braun taught me when insane degenerates just like yourselves ignore scientific facts. Anyway even non scientific individuals in the UK are aware of genome sequencing. That website of the fake university in Britain doesn’t exist. Yes, you know my name and you are aware about eugenics being real science. That’s why you refuse to reply with more of your defensive taught responsive and as if I were going to believe in a false website too.

      8. I have a MEng in the subject. I know more than you in this subject and probably more than your racist grandmother but can’t be asked to school you because a) I don’t really care what you think b) I don’t think it’ll make any difference anyway since you called a legitimate webpage on UCL’s website fake. UCL is a world leading university so your inability to accept the truth is what is hindering your ability to have a decent discussion.

      9. I very doubt your credentials! Because in previous comments you posted, you were contradicting yourself and obviously you are lying about your university credentials because in the first post you only wrote about the fictional university as if you were familiar to those department at the fake university as a “student.” When you wrote the previous post you didn’t use the grammar of a MEng. any ways of if you do have a Master in English you don’t have the academic expertise to have knowledge in the science of eugenics. A scientist who studied eugenics and genetics have a different degree that is not master of English. I do know more about the science of eugenics and that facts about my ancestry than you can comprehend. The British government had recorded the ancestry of my paternal Grandmother Queen Elizabeth and she is pure German. The British government angents are swore to follow all of my Grandmother Queen Elizabeth orders and she herself had access to her own ancestry records and also the records of my mom’s birth records and her ancestry. These ancestry of both my father Prince Charles and my mother are documented facts. It is you who is confused. It is good that you took several hours of your insignificant life to formulate a response as I previously thought you were going to commented more versions of your fantasy lies about your idea of “racial concept” and this post your your fantasy lies were expect of you.

      10. As I have written before you don’t have the scientific expertise about know the truth of the “racial construct” fantasy. An individual needs a Master degree just to consult about genetics, not a Master in engineering. A real scientist in genetics require to have a doctorate in Genetics to be a scientist. It is you who have proven to be a insane degenerate fool!!

      11. You are clearly inbred and therefore very confused about life. I don’t think you even know what eugenics is because if you did you would know that it is not accepted as a form of science anymore in any British university. And in fact universities are changing the names of their eugenic pasts. People like Pearson and Galton are not respected and bring shame.

      12. The inbred lies about my anecestry doesn’t bother me. It is you who is lying don’t you have a life because. The time in the UK is now 9:11 pm. If you had a real master in engineering degree don’t you have to be doing some work in the subject in engineering!? You won’t fool me as I write before, I have been to London and the people there do believe in eugenics and most of those individuals are non Scientists, if even the general public in the UK have knowledge in genetics obviously the scientists who have a doctorate in genetics know the truth about eugenics too.

      13. Your name is controversial, your arguments are contradictory and your evidence just forged! I honestly thought you had something of depth to challenge this write up but I have to say, this write up has backed up the point on every corner and angle with historical and social evidence. Please, how about writing an article in response to this one?

      14. My name may be controversial to you but not to me nor the British Royal family. What evidence are you referring too? What are you referring to by “historical and social evidence?”

      15. I just read this properly. Fake university. Lol – you poor poor thing. I pity you. Your grandma has ruined you. But you can’t hide in her shadow pet. You are your own person.

      16. Almost anything can be considered “racist” such as the “Black Lives Matter movement,” another Blogger on WordPress has documented the financial corruption involved in the “black lives matter movement” and the exploitation of incidents which the individuals of the “Black people lives matter movement” profit from and lie those national incidents were caused by “racism” towards blacks. It is actually the individuals in the “Black Lives Matter movement” who are motivated by their own racism towards other non black people.

      17. No, not anything can be considered racist–racism can be considered racist. Black people fighting for equality is not reverse racism, it’s justice. Eugenics–a science devoted to supremacy –is racist.

      18. That is the lie I wrote about the Black people, they justify the hidden racial hatred and consider it “justice” in order to create anarchy because the black people no longer want to be under the law. In the 1960’s the black people achieve their “justice” as in the civil rights movement. Why don’t these black people feel comfortable with the civil rights they had since the 1960’s! All their supposed racism that the black people are lying about has been illegal for many decades now. The black people already have equality by the civil rights act, what they want is for the black people to have more “rights” than other racial groups in America, one call call that “black supremacism” and the “Black Panthers” are in the “Black Lives Matter movement,” the Black Panthers is really a black supremacist group.

      19. Unless you are willing to traffic in reality there is no way to hold rational discussion. You clearly are deeply invested in a delusional racist ideology that does not align with reality. Thinking like this is what keeps hate alive.

      20. It is you who are insane in believing the black people are seeking “justice” and “equality” and no I am not in a “traffic” jam. You contradicted yourself, first you admitted about “eugenics” being “racist.” In eugenics black people are inferior which causes their violent behavior such as happened in Furguson, Missouri and Baltimore, Maryland.

  2. Very well captured . my question at the end of the day is how do black people educate and accommodate white people who choose to understand us only by the tip of the iceberg? How does one begin to relate to these groups of people or to this incomplete understanding of us? I ask this because I have found that there still exists a denial in these white people to recognise blacks as individuals and even human beings. I am speaking in the context of post apartheid South Africa. I find that they cannot here me explain our cultures or our thinking and opinions past what they have preconceived me as. E.g. If I am smart, I am a smart black, and if I am loud, I’m a typical black woman. Either way I have to fall into preconceived black box. So how do we make them listen past our race and their conceptions and see me as an individual?

    1. I’m not sure now is the time to hope for empathetic understanding. I dont believe we should accomodate people unwilling to do their own work. I think all of us-both black and white-have to get better at calling out racism and intolerance. All the time. Askng, accomodating and requesting have not worked. Legal enforcement that punishes those that trangress, coupled with galacial methods of social change and the hard slog of person to person relationships may help. The fact remains that some harbor hate and bias, and to spend our energy trying to convince them too often accomplishes nothing while depleting the collective energy needed to demand equality. Each day is a challenge to be you, but we have to choose to live on our feet, or we are sure to die in the box they have for us. Spread info, and be your beautiful self.

      1. WuaAh! If ” equality” existed then it would not be in the hands of judges and thought police!
I am proud of my White race! Hear me?
I do not have to be as smart as my ancestors, who were the most brilliant race ever!
I defy you to try and transform your present day jungle jingled Ebonics into the pristine language of the ancients- white race.
How dare you support a Congo stomping, head hunting , cannibalistic primate over the eloquent brilliance of accomplishment s that my ancestors broke bread and sweat to display!
My white race waded through swamps, jungles and disease to bring a better life to these horrid creatures! They not only refused the missionaries, they killed them, hung their shrunken heads on their waist and ate their flesh!
My white race stood defiant and confident when they were put to death for their bible beliefs!
The price they paid is all…ALL…so that you, you miserable excuse, could exhume the spirits of demons and smear their excretion on this the final act of the drama, MANKIND.
I Deplore thee! I beshrew thee!
        Get thee hence, Satan!

  3. “Race is not in our DNA, it’s a social construct.” Agreed, and you explain it well. But what exactly is a social construct? One might presume to think that any social construct is a culmination of a peoples culture, mores, historical traditions, and any and all events, occurrences, and encounters over the millennia that serve to provide a belief structure to cope in a daily reality. Likely there’s a far simpler definition but here’s my point… nature arms us humans with the ability to reason as part of our survival instincts. Reasoning requires the use of comparison, discriminating the environment (good plants to eat from bad plants, things that make a good shelter and things that don’t, etc.). Inbred in all of us (DNA?) is the ability to sort, separate, classify, quantify, and all the things that allow us to separate the good things in life from the bad things…. or those things we “perceive” to be good or bad. Perception is part and parcel of our ability to reason. We can reach conclusions and act upon those conclusions and usually learn from our mistakes if reality differs from our perception of it. Again, the ability to reason. So if you want to identify further racial discrimination.. passed social constructs… you might see that differentiating between ourselves as humans is, for us humans, totally instinctual. Cro-Magnon man coming across Neanderthal man would have immediately seen a physical difference and vice versa. Attributing other differences, like diet, family structure, etc. is just part of the mental classification we make in our minds.

What I am suggesting is that humans are born with the instinct to discriminate in his/her environment. From that we get racism and other stereotypic discriminatory thought processes. For the most part, modern man/woman (Uh! This PC stuff is for the birds!) has reasoned themselves into understanding that there are limits to what we should and should not discriminate socially and that we are all human in spite of our physical differences. Unfortunately, we humans, because we can reason, all act differently and reach our own conclusions differently, therefore we are in a constant struggle with each other (wars, racism, sexual interests, social competition, etc.).

Now, I am in no way suggesting that people are racist because we were born that way. But I am bringing to the discussion is that there is indeed a linkage in the human thought process that can extend to what modern man calls racism. Is that a key in and of itself to solving the racism issues of today? I think racism, in whatever form you want to call it, is part of human existence and has been since we stood upright. Perhaps the key and future hope is that we one day will reach a level of intellect where human differences are kept within the confines of our private minds and our actions express harmony.

    1. This is a really though provoking reply. What we have yet to address is that the categorization that you suggest is natural to the animal is key to surviving in this world with shrinking resources and many, many people. I think that the pack mentality, or tribalism is a functional part of our survival from the dawn of man. Surprisingly, dividing along race and color, instead of tribes or nations is quite new as a phenomenon–Just over 400 years, compared to 10,000+ years in tribal groups. Tribalism and its modern cousin nationalism are hugely problematic resulting in everything from terror to war. Racism brings this natural inclination to a global level, magnifying the effects times a thousand. While division is natural, there is a way to feel connected to our “pack” while respecting the rights of other packs to survive and thrive. Right now, in this moment in history we have to admit using race to divide , perhaps instinctual in some ways, is something as reasoned and evolved creatures we can think beyond.

  4. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to transcend one’s race is there?
It’s curious that at the same time we applaud Jenner’s self identification, we curse this woman’s self identification. We humans have strange inconsistent standards,do we not?

    1. We do, for sure, but the inconsistency lies in the unequal consequences at the heart of racism and other isms. We should be able to self identify, but until we remove the penalties of the construct of race then we just reinforce inequities.

  5. the problem w/ rachel is that yes she may have been doing good for black people, but she still has her white privilege advantage.
This reminds me of what my 11th grade english teacher said about Eminem. How in his music, videos, and on TV he “acted black”, but anytime he had to show up in court he “acted white.” This is evident from Rachel by the fact she sued Howard for discriminating against her for being a white woman.

It took me a few years to understand what she meant by that but i see it now. She couldn’t possibly understand our culture, no matter how hard she tried to fit in. She reminds me of the white girl that asked Malcolm X if she could do anything to help his cause. She couldn’t, because no matter how much she emphatized she would never understand the experience, same with Dolezal.

    1. Sometimes we have to see the pattern play out a few times to really get a sense of what we’re seeing. We’ll see what happens the first time she shows up without that weave.

  6. Does colour or race matter? Why can’t another human being speak for the other if there is injustice. The point is Rachel feels for the racial discrimination and she is bold enough to say this is wrong, so stop it. Rest are just bystanders….. If you go back to evolution of human race, then we all have a common origin.

  7. Does colour or race matter? One human being is fighting for injustice done to another, that is how we should see Rachel. In the end the entire human race comes from a common origin. The debate about Rachel being a black or white is inappropriate. She has a conscience and she is fighting for a cause that’s that. I don’t understand what’s the problem? Why the debate on her colour? Probably the people debating are racist.

    1. I’m debating and I’m not a racist. I care deeply about these issues. Everyone should be fighting for this cause since it affects all of us. If you found out your pilot wasn’t really a pilot, but he had done a good job, would you fly with him again?

      1. Racism is a serious matter. And I think all of this has been blown out of proportion. I am from India and I don’t know wether you have heard of Dr. Annie Besant, she is known for her great efforts in India’s freedom struggle. She even wore a sari. She was neither from Indian parentage nor born in India. She fought for India’s freedom struggle.Humanity is different from flying planes. What will she gain for passing as a black woman? There is so much prejudice regarding race, those who haven’t been through will never understand. But the question is why is west in a debate if someone wants to look from black origin. Maybe because certain people are used to the fact that other races should continue to use fairness creams. It’s ok it will take a lot of time for people to understand to value a person for whom he or she is rather first looking at the colour. Ignite your minds guys and reason. Please don’t make a mountain out of a molehill.

      2. I think if someone misrepersents themselves, intentionally lying to suit their needs of the moment then they should be held accountable. Why this is a big deal is because the west operates on a system of white supremacy, and situations like this challenge that system. If we all want to be respected as human then that needs to be dismantled, not subverted for personal gain.

  8. I ask this because I have found that there still exists a denial in these white people to recognise blacks as individuals and even human beings

    1. This is the devilish center of racism. The events in Charleston show how important what we say as a culture is. It have taken centuries to divide us so our work is cut out for us.

  9. Put simply. We (all) are one race. Human. Unfortunately social AND economic status seperates that ONE in to many. Apart from that the teachers of our past, present, and future generations will forever instill in our race that we can’t be one. Just to clarify “teachers,” I mean whoever teaches us to be seperate.

  10. you have a cool blog and this was a great read. can you check out my blog when you get a chance

      1. Well, I didnt say that either. It sure is a fight and it doesnt seem like the environment is getting less hostile!

  11. I’m still forming an overall opinion on this thought provoking post 🙂 But one comment I really liked “Our common origin has been corrupted by categorization devised to divide and conquer.” I wholeheartedly agree with that statement, as I see absolutely no difference between colors/races/what-have-you-s. There’s only one race – mankind and many beautiful versions of that one race. But it serves someone well to have us pitted against each other. I believe this to be true to genders, religions and other beliefs. Together we stand, divided we fall.

    1. Well said–I agree. Its those hands that pull us apart that we have to get a hold of. We can’t be human until we’re all human

  12. Reblogged this on Gil Shalev and commented:
While still forming an overall opinion on this thought provoking post I’d like to share it with you 🙂
One comment there caught my eye: “Our common origin has been corrupted by categorization devised to divide and conquer.”

  13. This was extremely well written. Also, thank you for pointing out that people trying to capture the white stereotypes often misplace their own heritage. DNA isn’t important, and you basically slammed down the social construct of racism and prejudice!!! Great read!!!

  14. I treat everyone equally, regardless of race. Does this make me a minority lol. I can understand why you would be annoyed at this womans actions as it seems like it is a half hearted attempt or as you say “the top of the iceberg”, is it possible though that she is doing what she is doing from a mistaken belief that she is doing everything she can to help? Would maybe engaging with her and educating her be more appropriate than the abuse and humiliation? Just a thought

  15. Its great to see that some people do have a strong oversight on matters such as this. I appreciate your words and agree with what you’ve said here about cultural appropriateness and it’s offensive nature.

It’s interesting to see that race itself is a constructed concept that essentially comes hand in hand with racial discrimination!

  16. Reblogged this on candynwa and commented:
I still do not get it, we are all human created by one God, with the same blood flowing in us. Now there is nothing like white blood in white people or black blood flowing in black people but rather a strong red blood going through our veins.

  17. Reblogged this on lakhdarmerieme and commented:
The question of Colour and Race is the infinite on-going debate, how long would this question keep on going? I am North African originally but I am white as it comes, with a black grandfather and a white grandmother, but I don’t want define myself by my color, but in contrast by my values, I am proud to be African, and glad to have had that heritage as a culture, but we do judge anyone who is debating a color or race issue, I think Rachel Dolezal wanted to belong to a community that is all, it could have been Chinese, Arab or Black. In my opinion, it is a community debate, wanting to belong somewhere more anything else.

  18. Hi Susan – I’ve been thinking deeply about Rachel D. for days now, trying to tease out what I know about racial/cultural identity, listening to interviews with her and trying to understand her background and the circumstances that contributed to her false identification as a black woman. You are undoubtedly familiar with Janet Helms’ Racial Identity Development Model. At first, I thought Rachel was in the phase of rejecting her own (white) culture and idealizing black culture; trying to be as black as she could possibly be. this phenomenon has been well described in the cultural adjustment literature and was described by Peace Corps people as “going native.” but the more I find out about her, the more I think that there are other issues mixed in. I find her strangely detached in interviews, not taking any responsibility for her behavior including making some ridiculous statements to justify her behavior (like, how could she raise black sons as a white woman). She refers to some of her past lies as “creative non-fiction.” (Really?!). To teach black studies classes is probably the ultimate level of arrogance.
She reminded me at first about Howard Griffin, the white journalist who dyed his skin black in the 60s, to experience what it was like to be Black then. He wrote “Black like Me.” But Rachel’s situation has a very different feel; I am almost wondering about a personality disorder with a bit of sociopathic tendencies thrown in. I just don’t know enough yet about her background. would love to do a clinical interview with her (I am a clinical psychologist and did my master’s thesis on cultural adjustment; also have a multi-racial family and have lived in several cultures, so I am familiar with racial and cultural identity processes). In any case, she is a fascinating case and certainly brings to the fore many issues related to race, culture, self-identity, etc. I wonder what she will do next and how she will find a way to be in the world, now that her cover has been blown.
Enjoyed reading your take on the matter.

    1. Thanks for the comment. I’m fascinated by the intersection of your experiences and how it lends itself to deeper analysis of her situation. As intense as all the attention was, I wonder if she feels like she somehow lost her moment to finish whatever process she was going through when the news shifted to Charleston. I have heard that she is in talks for a reality show. I hope she takes the time to do some soul searching. I can’t help but imagine what she feels, weave out and looking wholly herself, if she will take a pause and get reflective instead of defensive. Thanks again for reading and for your interesting comment!

      1. There is certainly some potential there for continued discussion of all these intersecting issues. I am not ready to entirely dismiss her experience. I think it would be interesting to branch out and compare with other people in multi-racial families and how they are processing the wide spectrum of racial identity. There are now so many different family combinations and multi-racial and multi-cultural people in the world. Surely, we can have an intelligent exploration, don’t you think?
